Most people start out just wanting to edit some pre written scripts but then find themselves performing more complicated tasks later. Programming is rather addictive once you get started.

Handling one problem at a time is the best way to learn. Reaching to far will only lead to a letdown. Dont try something advanced until you are ready to start solving larger problem sets.

Remember that solving small problems is much easier than solving all problems at the same time.

I personally have to thank google for any ability with php I have. Just google what your trying to do with the word php at the end. More often than not you will at least come up with an idea of how to solve your problem.

Try not to think of problems in any way other than their most basic function, this modular approach will allow you to reuse old code again and again.
